In order to carry out my plan, there are certain resources that I will need. In order to customize and personalize learning activities, I will need access to the Internet. This is usually where I go to find new ideas for my teaching. Visiting different forums and blogs allow me to gather a wide variety of ideas to create lessons from. Since receiving our Promethean boards this year, I have also found the Promethean Planet website extremely helpful. While this website has activities that are already created, they also offer resource packs for you to download to create your own activities and games. There are also several different forums and message boards on this site in order to gain new ideas. Finally, I can use my colleagues for new and exciting ideas. Sometimes, just listening to a lesson others teach inspires a whole new lesson that would work wonderfully for your own students.
The additional information needed for this standard would obviously be knowing the students I will have next year. I will need to look through their files, learn what areas they have trouble with, and just spend time getting to know them so that I know what learning styles fit them best. You cannot create a personalized lesson without first knowing the people you will be presenting it to. There are several lessons I have used this year that never would have worked in the past based solely on the students that were in my room. So far, I have taken several steps to implement this plan. I have spent a lot of time on the Promethean Planet website, as well as, brainstorming with other teachers in my building for different ideas on teaching skills. I take what I have found in these areas and add personal touches to them that I know will capture the attention of my students and assist them in learning the material.
In order to model cultural understanding and engage with colleagues and students of other cultures, I will need to find an online "pen pal" system such as Epals. Through this site, I should be able to connect with a teacher from another country. This teacher and I would be able to correspond and decide if a partnership could be set up. We would be able to discuss the different standards our students must learn and decide how we can help each other accomplish these. We would need to e-mail often to correlate lessons and activities we would want our students to complete together. It would take some time and effort on our parts, but hopefully it would turn out to be a rewarding experience for the students. I would still need to gather a great deal of information in this area because I have never done anything like this before. Therefore, I have not taken many steps to implement this plan yet. So far, I plan to look into these sites over the summer and try to get something set in place for around the middle of the school year next year.

Lindsay,
ReplyDeleteI agree 100% that you have to get to know the students that you are teaching before you can decide how teach them to their needs. I too have set a goal at allowing my students to engage in conversation with students from other countries. I began looking at the ePals website. Have you ever done such a thing or know someone who has? I am looking for any advice others can give before I begin this journey.
Lindsay,
ReplyDeleteYou are compiling lessons for your Promethean Board but you did not say where you are keeping this information. Are you keeping it on your Delicious site or is it in a portfolio of some kind? I am also trying to compile lessons for my GAME Plan and I have tried to keep my sites listed on my Delicious site but this does not include a place to keep plans that I create. What are you doing?
I agree that some of my best lessons come from collaborating with other teachers. If only we had more time to do that!
Thanks!
Kerry
Lindsay,
ReplyDeleteI am impressed with your use of the internet to gain new and updated strategies to use with your students. Have you found the Promethean Packs to help you create digital sources that help you to better reach your students during lessons? How do your students learn best with the Promethean board? Is there one particular area of study that you feel student understanding has rapidly improved due to the Promethean Board being implemented in your classroom?
Susan,
ReplyDeleteI have not yet begun to look through the Epals website. I am planning on starting this with my free time over the summer since the end of the school year is so hectic. I have not known any other teachers to use this tool, so it will all be new to me. I am hoping that the website is easy to navigate and self explanatory so that it will be easy enough for me to find someone to collaborate with.
Kerry,
The lessons that I have found for the Promethean board have come from the Promethean Planet website. Right now, I have these flipcharts saved to a jump drive that I am using specifically for this purpose. I have different folders set up in my H drive at school to keep them organized, but was then told we can no longer store them here because it uses up too much space. I do not have them saved to the Delicious site. Since this is not something that the students could use at home very well without this software and board, I just have it saved in a place for me. The lessons I have created myself are also saved to the jump drive. I also agree that we could use more time to collaborate. It seems like every time we are scheduled to do this, something else gets in the way.
Rachel,
Yes, I have downloaded a few of the resource packs, but have not used them yet. So far for the lessons I have created I have just used the items located in the resource browser. I plan to get a little more creative and in depth with my lessons over the summer when I have time to actually work on them. So far I cannot tell which subject area will be helped the most by using this board. We literally just got them at the beginning of the month, so there really has not been much time to use them for core lessons. We are mainly just reviewing at this point in the year, and finding activities to keep the students engaged for the last few days of school.
Lindsay,
ReplyDeleteI am interested in doing a penpal type activity as well. I am glad you talked about Epals. I, too, have never done something like this so we will have to share ideas or experiences. Good luck!
Lindsay,
ReplyDeleteI also agree that you have to get to know your students before you know their learning styles. Sometimes this takes a while to do. I have seen some survey type activities that ask questions about what the learner likes to do or prefers to do as far as work goes. I wonder if that would be helpful for us to use to be able to determine up front what our students' learning styles are? If nothing else, it might give us a starting place.
